This mechanic is relevant to Encounters only. During an encounter, whichever pilot's ship has the most threat will draw the fire from NPC ships. At the beginning of an encounter, each ship has a threat score of zero. As the encounter progresses, each ship will generate threat. At the start of each NPC's turn, the system will check and see which ship has the most threat. That ship will be targeted and fired upon.

How is threat calculated?

Threat is calculated in a few ways.

Damage Done

100% of damage dealt to a NPC target will be added to the player's threat score.

Shield Boosts

Threat is also generated by boosting an ally ship's shields. 100% of the shield restore amount is added to the pilot's threat score. The receiving ship's threat score is unaffected.

A critical fail roll on a shield boost will result in the the pilot's threat score increasing by 100 * their ship's base shield boost bonus...Try not to crit fail :)

Damage Reflect

If an NPC ship attacks a pilot that has damage reflect mods installed, 100% of the reflected damage will be added to their threat score.

Augmenting Threat

A pilot's threat percentage can be raised or lowered, depending on desired role, by installing threat increase or decrease mods. Mods with "+VAL% Threat" will increase the amount of threat generated by whatever percentage is listed, while mods with "-VAL% Threat" will decrease the amount of threat generated.
